Wednesday Blogs

56° - clear at 8:35pm

Late Wednesday post. A busy day here with an opportunity to learn some music research tools as part of my continuing education.

From my blogosphere:

Classic Rock "Jacked". Edison Media's Sean Ross notes some shifts toward classic rock by some Jack-FM and Bob-FM outlets. Sean writes:

"For all of the format's variety image, we've already asserted that they were, at the core, Classic Rock formats for those who grew up in the late '70s/'80s and have poppier sensibilities."
Read here.

CGM. Fred Jacobs blogs on CGM promotions - sharing some tips from Ben McConnell and Shahi Ghanem - accompanied by his own comments.

A great read
here.

"We can think we know what the listener wants,
but you’ll only know when you start talking with them."
- Consultant Alan Mason writing
here.

In the news:

Bruce Springsteen: Streetpulse - via All Access reports the new CD #1 based on Tuesday sales. Very nice Boss!

Bill Figenshu. Congrats. Just announced new job as President/Broadcast Operations & Development for Peak Broadcasting - a relatively new company with stations in Fresno & Boise.

I don't know Fig - but I know his background and reputation. A one-time "progressive rock" jock. Brilliant Programmer. Later ran Viacom Radio. His resume
here.

In comments posted today both on All Access and (in-depth) on Mark Ramsey's Hear 2.0 - Fig offered these thoughts post-NAB:

"The leaders of radio companies are looking very tired. Seven years of creating no value for their stockholders and investors is taking the toll. Other than DAN MASON, radio companies need to put operators in charge again. It will be a hard decision for current CEOs to give up some power, but until creative people start to run radio companies again, with a vision beyond sales and revenue, there will be more of the same. Revenue is important, but we are being challenged creatively, and have not responded effectively."

"Radio is good at serving it’s communities every day. Radio is bad at positioning itself. Radio people are great at positioning their stations, bad at positioning themselves."

"The press has created stars out of financial operators. We have made company leaders personalities, who now believe they can operate radio from the budget line, not the content line. Senior executives with creative content ideas, on-air and online, will be the trend in 2008. Not bankers."

"Radio must start paying attention to trends of young people. On-line and on-air, they are telling us about song repetition, format diversity and lack of local content. We talk about it, but we don’t go far enough. The content must get better. In 2008 and beyond, it will be about quality, not quantity."

Let's hope. And thanks Fig.

Condolences: To family and friends of well-known air talent Tawn Mastrey - who passed away yesterday. Click here.

I recall Tawn's work from radio syndication (Westwood One) and MTV. Her resume includes KNAC, Pirate Radio/LA, KSJO, Sirius Satellite and others.

Words From A Country Consultant

Much of whats discussed, written and blogged about radio programming can apply to just about any format.

With that I spend some time each week reading and learning with articles and posts intended for other formats.

One excellent blog I've written about before
is this one from Country Radio's Jaye Albright - one half of the dynamic duo known as Albright & O'Malley.

Jaye recently offered this:

Do you know who your premium class listeners are?
  • Heavy users of radio who are deeply engaged in your radio station?
  • Your at work listeners?
  • Your listeners who love winning contests and prizes?
  • The ones who enjoy giving their opinions in surveys?
  • Your morning show regulars?
  • The folks who love the kind of music you play?
  • People who use you to stay in touch with the local community?
What can you do during this current ratings survey to make money with that information and make them feel more engaged with you?

AM Drive in Denver & Classic Rock Websites

59° - fog at 9:10am

Good Morning from Okemos

KRFX/Denver:
Fox AM drivers Lewis & Floorwax are on vacation this week - and filling in for them is Jack Blades. That's Jack Blades of Night Ranger/Damn Yankees fame.

Very cool. Jack chatting with his friends - just heard him talking on the phone to Frank Beard of ZZ Top.

btw: Great bench/locker room audio from last night's Colorado Rockies win via KRFX sports guy G-Man.

Might be wrong - but Blades sounds tracked - not that it matters to the listener. And Mr. Blades apparently has a bit of freedom with the playlist!

Last week Alice Cooper spent some time in the KRFX studios with PM driver Shark. Kudos to PD Garner Goin.

Wondering if Joe Walsh has done any AM drive vacation fill-in anywhere in recent years??

Hysterical....me? How I felt "the morning after" following my rant late last night about one station's listener club email "strategy".

Thanks to Dave Martin
for the mention on his blog this morning.

Classic Rock Station Websites.
Fred Jacobs wrote yesterday on classic rock radio websites and the potential for social networking. Fred blogs:

"Creating social networking opportunties for Classic Rockers, for example, is a slam dunk. They may come from different walks of life, but their one common thread is their passion for the music. And they love to talk about it."

"Just conduct some Classic Rock focus groups, and watch the fun. Even after the groups are over, and the respondents have been paid off, there's always a small group in the parking lot, continuing to debate whether Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper's is the better Beatles album, or whether Keith Richards or Joe Perry is the superior axman."

Monday Monday

60° - light drizzle at 9:50pm

Good evening. Late post; another busy one today.

I don't sound off too often - but someone please stop the madness I'm about to share...

While checking an email account last night (Sunday) - one
I use for station listener and VIP email clubs - I noted an abudance of emails from the same station listener club.

Between Monday and Saturday this station sent me
ten emails - each dealing with single topics; many over and over again.

Monday brought 3 emails (2 were duplicates about the morning show) - the other one was notice that ZZ Top was coming to town.

On Tuesday I had 2 emails from the station - one to tell me I could "Beat The Box Office" for ZZ Top tickets on Thursday.

Only one email Wednesday
- reminding me again of the ZZ Top pre-sale on Thursday.

Thursday - 10:30am - an email to remind me that ZZ Top Pre-Sale has begun.

Later Thursday
- 3:01pm - brought a second email. Subject line: "Did you buy your ZZ Top tickets?" Stop nagging me!

Friday and Saturday brought one email each day - two different topics - to finish out the week. At least ZZ Top was done. Nothing Sunday. Two emails from the station today (so far).

Stop doing this!
You're risking your entire email marketing program to spam folders and blacklisting. Think moderation.

I'm just say'n. And I'll have some cheese with that wine - uh, whine.

Sunday while reminiscing about listening to a small Indiana station in 1971, I blogged: "
When traveling back in that era one could hear and discover songs & artists on the radio that hadn't made it to my hometown Chicago stations."

Coincidently - Lee Abrams wrote this morning:

"Back then you could also listen to regional stations and hear new stuff that hadn’t broken Nationally yet. I remember hearing “Journey to the Center of the Mind” on CKLW and importing that…or local band Heart getting action on our client KISW and importing that around the country."

Lee on the old days - why the Sex Pistols suck - and more here.

And thanks - to legendary Midwest AOR Air Personality Randy Raley (KSHE/St. Louis; KYYS & KCFX/Kansas City - and others) for the kind email yesterday. Randy made my day - writing:

"Your blog makes me long for a chance to pop back in the game again and put in those 16 hour days like I used to do. Thank you for showing off the stations who still do it right, like WKLH and the great ones who know it's about the content and the connection not just the songs."

Randy mentions he's about to get something many of us only dream of: Saturday Nights on a 50kw AM blowtorch: KMOX/St. Louis.

"Route 66" with Randy Raley will begin Saturday, October 13th - in most of Mid-America on 1120/KMOX - streaming on the web everywhere. More info on Randy's great blog here.

Have a good night.
