Monday Monday

32° - mostly cloudy at 7:35am

Last week turned into a busy one between the day job, the night job and everything else. And it didn't stop over the weekend. Thanks for stopping by.

From around my blogosphere:

Jerry Del Colliano has a great piece
posted this morning: "Better Radio At No Additional Cost". In it, Jerry remembers Dick Carr of WIP/Philadelphia:

"When Dick prevailed at WIP he had one operating principle that always served him well. It cost no extra money -- it was a way to look for the additional benefits that make listeners appreciate you over and over again. He called it Another Reason to Listen."

"Everything that is done on the air should be designed to give the audience another reason to tune in and stay with the station. As Dick Carr puts it, "Work to create a listener expectation wherein once they heard "a shoe drop", they would instinctively turn to your station"."

Worth your time this morning. Read here.

Related piece from Dave Lange:
Dave posts a great read on his blog "Opportunties Ahead #1" In the piece, Dave notes:

"Be Local: No doubt the biggest opportunity for radio is that it's LOCAL. While most of the new media, cable networks, broadcast networks and nearly all the web is national or even world wide most of the audience's world lies in their local area. We all know this, but in the end we do little to capitalize on it."

More here - including some thoughts on what you might do on a day-to-day basis.

Pass along to your GM/GSM:
Alan Mason writes about those email "out of office" auto-responders - and something very clever your salespeople could be doing. In fact, I think even programmers or anyone on staff could be doing:

"Whoops. You've caught me at one of the rare times I'm not here waiting to help you. I'm gone for a short period but want you to receive royal treatment. This message has been automatically forwarded to our Sales Assistant, Carla ___. She'll be in touch with you forthwith. By the way, click on this link and you'll see a video of what happens when we do a remote at Van Chevrolet."

Alan does note that "If you're in business today, every e-mail should be forwarded to your PDA or cell phone." Read more here.

Welcome back David Martin. After a brief absence, Mr. Martin is back on his blog. Always worth your time. Read here.

And Dave: I did enjoy our conversation and intend to follow-up as promised. Last week turned impossible.

Belated congrats:
To Fred Jacobs and Jacobs Media Web Guru Tim Davis, who created a custom station-branded iPhone application to listen to station streams. Read here. View below:

Back On The Job

33° - clear at 10:10pm

It's been a long week. Not yet caught up on rest. And the blog!

A couple of highlights from the Great Lakes Broadcast Conference and Expo held in Grand Rapids on Monday and Tuesday: One was a session on station websites "60 in 60: 60 Web Ideas In 60 Minutes", hosted by Fred Jacobs and Tim Davis of Jacobs Media along with Chris Brunt of Greater Media's Detroit cluster.

My only regret was not being able to see the entire presentation with my conference responsibilities. But there were plenty in the almost-packed room feverishly taking notes. Thanks to Fred, Tim and Chris for making the trip from the Motor City - and congrats on a great hour of website ideas.

The other highlight
was the Tuesday Night Broadcast Excellence Awards. It served as a reminder of the many great stations still doing all things local and doing them well. In both large, medium and small markets in the State of Michigan.

Lee Abrams teamed up with Randy Michaels. During the Michigan conference I had a rare chance to check my email and there it was in a R&R news bulletin.

All I could think is "wow".
Lee - on his blog (here) writes about Randy:

"He’s possibly the smartest guy I’ve ever met He MIGHT be crazier than me…at least I won’t have to fear being too out there. We ARE going to re-write the future of media. He’s the kinda guy you want to do it with."

First Randy and now Lee. Tribune is one to watch in the coming year.

Congrats:
To WKLH's Steve Palec. The longtime host of the station's Sunday Morning "Rock 'N Roll Roots" program adds weeknights 7-9pm to his schedule with the "Legends of Rock". A very cool move.

And speaking of WKLH.
I can't help but love this graphic around Bruce Springsteen's appearance Monday Night in Milwaukee. Monday is St. Patrick's Day!

More congrats: To the legendary Tom Kent - who's just launched The Tom Kent Radio Network. Listen for his programming to come to an oldies/classic hits station near you.

Somewhere in my collection I have a quick aircheck of Tom on WHBQ/Memphis in the early 70s.
Very few could match the combination of talent and extreme high energy that Tom displayed night after night back then.

And oldies.
Edison Media's Sean Ross takes a look at "The New Oldies". A good read here.

I'm still catching up on my reading.

Wednesday Blogs & Beyond

80° - sunny at 9:40am Left: webcam shot of light tower on Lake Michigan at Muskegon this morning. current image

Good Morning.

From my blogosphere:

Defining Classic Rock. Edison Media Research's Tom Webster: "What is it? So, here is my question--and I'd love the rock programmers reading this to chime in with comments--what defines "classic?" Popularity? Importance?"

Read and comment here.

A "40-something" cab driver talking radio: "The eye wants the new, but the ear wants the familiar." Mark Ramsey goes for a cab ride here.

Your station website. Some thoughts and resources from Jacobs Media's Tim Davis here.

Added: Lee Arnold with a post about CBGB owner Hilly Kristal - who passed away yesterday. Read here. CBGB - and the music that came out of it in the mid 70s - stirs thoughts of a great era in my head.

Beyond the blogs:

Ted Nugent on Bill O'Reilly tonight on Fox News Channel (8pm ET). Nothing new here. I'm a bit ho-hum on Ted's shtick. Wears thin fast.

Springsteen Tour. Kicks off in Hartford October 2nd. See the dates here.

Another hot promotional opportunity for classic rock this fall.

More Labor Day Weekend: WDRV/Chicago is repeating their "Live Drive Weekend" - live tracks all weekend long.

KZEP/San Antonio kicks off "Zeptember" (celebrating the station's namesake) this weekend starting with a Led Zep A to Z. Here.

Less personality: Overnights go jockless in Chicago - on two stations owned by Emmis. Read Robert Feder here. Sorry to hear this; there's always been something very cool & intimate with a live voice talking to the third shifters, insomniacs and freaks of the night.

Wednesday Blogs

Sunny & 65° at 11am

Good Morning...random notes from my blogosphere:

Are you boring?
No, not you - your station. Dave Lange of McVay Media has some great ideas to help get something going on - here.

Station fashion. Back on Monday, Fred Jacobs writes here about the evolution of radio station logo-wear - or rather the lack thereof. Mentions HBO's Entourage (one of my few television priorities each week) and the line of clothing created from the show.

This morning, Jacobs Media debuts their
new website. Congrats to Fred and their in-house specialist Tim Davis.

Road Trip. Nine years ago last Friday, Lee Abrams drove from Dallas for the start-up of XM Radio. In this blog post, Lee remembers brainstorming, notes on napkins, camping out in a conference room and more.

There's nothing like a start-up and I've been fortunate enough as a programmer to do as many start-ups as I have fingers; a few more as just an air talent. Each one provided a rush that could never be duplicated by any other means. And there's that moment when the first book comes in...

Keeping up with indecency. Last Friday - after almost a year since legislation was passed - the FCC issued its order to increase fines for indecency....the dreaded $325,000 per occurance.

Then on Monday, the US Court of Appeals threw out the FCC indecency fines as "arbitrary and capricious" - and rightfully so. Broadcast attorney David Oxenford offers more on the Broadcast Law Blog
here.

Sidenote: David has played a role in some of my start-ups in the past!

Have a great Wednesday.

Sunny/81° at 11am!

Almost to the long weekend.

From my blogosphere:

Making the personal connection.
Have written here about stations getting out and meeting listeners - be it taking a show to a workplace like WKLH/Milwaukee or listener homes like CLIQ/Toronto. Bar remotes. Parades. Other community functions. Meeting listeners outside a concert venue. Interacting with fans. And not always for the "talent fee".

Jacobs Media Internet specialist Tim Davis writes about connecting with listeners - "our secret sauce"
here; and there's a great follow-up comment from Greg Gillispie.

Salespeople.
Fred Jacobs writes here this morning about sales people - and finding bright, motivated sellers. He also mentions a little game I've been guilty of playing in my head everytime a new salesperson has entered the building.

Sales professionals are under-appreciated. We need more of them to make our programming, promotions, ideas and listener benefits succeed.

Share Fred's piece with your GM and SM today.

More shock-jock thoughts.
Mark Ramsey shares his thoughts on "comedy minus cruelty". Here.

And from country KMLE/Phoenix comes this:

Have a great Wednesday!
