Local Hero

67° - drizzle at 7:09am

Good Morning from Michigan.

This is simply a great promotion - from
WPYX in Albany. Has localism, heart, community and listener participation. And can be done with any similar jobs in your community.

With the anniversary of 9/11 coming up, this is very timely. But it really can be done anytime of the year.

Check out WPYX's web execution
here.

A great job WPYX!

Interesting idea. I'd love to be able to find out how well it ends up working for the station. I wonder, though, how many listeners are familiar with individual firefighters...at least familiar enough to take the time to go vote at the website.

The impact of the web presentation, unfortunately, is diminished by the amazing amount of spelling and grammatical errors. "VOCHURE," "accomidations," "just saved 2 woman," "obsticals?"

Call me nitpicky, but that all detracts from the execution, and makes it look amateurish. If I were considering buying an ad on that site, I'd likely look elsewhere after trying to read that page.

Thanks for joining the conversation. And yes, you're right. Someone at the station needs to use spell check; certainly someone else needs to proof. It does distract.

But that aside, the promotion gives everyone a chance to make a firefighter a hero. And that's almost irrelevant as to whether they wind up as Firefigher of the Year or not.

I haven't been able to spend time listening online yet, but I hope the station is mentioning on the air the names of those nominated.
